Ratings Methodology

At J.D. Power, we base our independent and unbiased ratings, reviews, and awards on detailed survey feedback from hundreds of thousands of verified car owners and their experiences throughout the first three months of car ownership and through the next three years of car ownership. For real insider knowledge, our surveys ask hundreds of questions covering vehicle attributes such as quality and reliability, driving experience, resale value, and the car dealership experience (buying and servicing the car). Every detail matters!
Once we've collected the feedback and categorized them into specific price (luxury vs. non-luxury) and car size (compact, small, midsize, and large), we start crunching the numbers. Ratings are calculated by the distance between the specific model attribute to the average score of the same category or peer group.
From the collection, categorization, and formation of these ratings comes the J.D. Power 100-Point Score and award-winners. Our J.D. Power Overall Score is a rating out of 100 given to each model per year. This score encompasses quality and reliability (30%), driving experience (30%), resale value (10%), and dealership experience (30%).
Quality and Reliability
  • This category examines problems experienced by verified car owners. The fewer vehicle issues that owners experience, including defects, malfunctions, or control features that are difficult to understand or operate, the better the rating.
  • Compares the average of all car models and brands within that category to determine the "Quality and Reliability" rating.
Driving Experience
  • This rating looks at the owners' evaluation of the design, comfort, functionality, safety, and technology of the new vehicle.
  • Driving experience ratings are based on the J.D. Power APEAL study, whose score naturally deteriorates over time.
Resale Value
  • Based on expected resale value depreciation over the next three years. The less depreciation, the better the rating.
Dealership Experience
  • This rating is an accumulation of experience evaluation, including dealer personnel, vehicle delivery, negotiation process, paperwork completion, facilities, and the dealership website.
  • The experience evaluation also examines service initiation, advisor interaction, facilities, vehicle pickup, and service quality.
J.D. Power Score Classifications
Model ratings are then grouped into our rating classifications for quick, high-level comparisons shown below.
  • Among the best (90-100) Models within this classification are the highest-rated within their category according to their owners. The model with the highest rating in its category becomes the award-winner for the year.
  • Above average (81-90) Models belonging in the "above average" classification didn't rate high enough to be considered for the top of their category but were better than the average ratings within their categories.
  • Average (70-80) Models within this classification earned a par score within their category according to owner feedback. As a benchmark, the average 100-Point Score is settled at 80 for the most recent model year, and older models usually experience a lower average rating than 80.
  • Below Average (0-69) This classification represents models that didn’t make the cut and were scored below average by owners within their category.
NOTE: Via the latest and greatest technology, all vehicle ratings on the site (past and current) are updated when new vehicle models are introduced to the market, as their data provides new baselines. Therefore, older vehicle ratings are subject to change as new models emerge.
