2021 Lexus ES Changes Add Go in the Snow, Custom Luggage, and More

Christian Wardlaw | Aug 20, 2020

For the first time in nearly 30 years, you’ll be able to buy a Lexus ES 250 again. That’s one of several newsflashes associated with the 2021 Lexus ES lineup, which also expands to include a special edition model that comes with a custom Zero Halliburton luggage set.

Equipped with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine good for 203 horsepower, the new 2021 Lexus ES 250 includes standard all-wheel drive. This is the same drivetrain that Lexus’ parent company Toyota employs in the Camry AWD and Avalon AWD models, and given that the Lexus ES shares its platform and vehicle architecture with the Avalon, the engineering exercise is basically plug-and-play.

An 8-speed automatic sends the power to the car’s front wheels. When they slip, or when the driver accelerates with enthusiasm, the AWD system responds by shipping up to half of the power to the rear wheels. When AWD is inactive, the system automatically decouples to reduce driveline drag and improve fuel economy. Lexus says the ES 250 AWD will get 28 mpg in combined driving.

Available in all trim levels including F Sport, the new Lexus ES 250 AWD is priced from $39,900 to $48,900. It costs the same as the ES 350 with its V6 engine and front-wheel drive. The ES 300h also returns for 2021, spanning from $41,810 in base trim to $50,810 in Ultra Luxury specification.

Speaking of the ES 300h, it gets a new lithium-ion battery for 2021, which replaces the old nickel-metal hydride battery. Meanwhile, the ES 350 adds an exclusive new Black Line Special Edition variant that costs $46,550. Lexus plans to build just 1,500 examples of this version of the car.

Based on the ES 350 F Sport, the new Black Line SE is a styling exercise that adds a black rear spoiler, black mirror caps, and black wheels combined with a choice between black, white, or Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0 paint. Inside, the Lexus ES 350 Black Line Special Edition features a black and white interior with gray stitching. This limited-production ES also includes the set of custom luggage.

The only other changes to the 2021 Lexus ES lineup include standard blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning on all but the base trim level, and a new Rich Cream semi-aniline leather over Espresso wood color combination for the Ultra Luxury versions of the car.

The updated Lexus ES will join the substantially reworked 2021 Lexus IS in the company’s showrooms. Together, they are expected to account for the bulk of Lexus car sales.
