2021 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Steers in Off-Road Direction

Jack R. Nerad | Mar 04, 2021

Is the motoring world ready for an electric-powered off-road vehicle that can rocket from zero to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds? Soon we will find out as the 2021 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo goes on sale this summer.

Perhaps it is overstating the case to emphasize the off-road aspirations of the station wagon/crossover variant of the Porsche Taycan sedan. But the vehicle's taller ride height, all-wheel-drive configuration, and body cladding all send those messages. Certainly, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has nothing to fear, but the new model will be an interesting competitor to the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E 450 All-Terrain.

As one might expect in a vehicle designed for at least some off-pavement use, the Taycan Cross Turismo makes the Taycan sedan's optional all-wheel-drive system standard. The electric vehicle uses two permanent-magnet synchronous motors producing various amounts of power keyed to the trim level. The Taycan Cross Turismo 4 offers 469 horsepower. The 4S offers 562 horsepower. The Turbo offers 670 horsepower. And the Turbo S tops them all with a heady 750 horsepower.

In all trims, the motor powering the rear wheels uses a two-speed transmission for better range and efficiency at highway speeds. An 83.7-kWh battery pack supplies electrons to the motors, equal to the sedan's larger battery arrays. In Turbo S form, Porsche says the long-roofed Taycan will achieve 60 mph from a standing start in 2.7 seconds.

While the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has yet to weigh in on the answer to this question, reviewing the various Taycan sedan models' ratings is instructive. Existing Taycans have EPA-certified driving range numbers of about 200-225 miles. While the Cross Turismo is heavier than the sedan, it should offer at least 200 miles of travel between charging sessions.

How Much Cargo Can a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Carry? - Find the best Porsche deals!

With its station wagon body shape, the Taycan Cross Turismo should carry more cargo than its sedan sibling, but the reality is not all that impressive.

Depending upon configuration, the Cross Turismo has a maximum of 16 cubic feet of cargo space behind its back seat. In comparison, the Taycan sedan's trunk offers 14 cu.-ft.

With the rear seats folded down, the Cross Turismo's luggage space markedly improves to a maximum of 43 cu.-ft. A 2.9 cu.-ft. front trunk (frunk) supplements the room within the conventional load area.

In addition to the all-wheel-drive setup, the Cross Turismo's air suspension underscores its off-road (or gravel road) credibility.

Compared to the Taycan sedan, the Cross Turismo rides 0.8-inch higher than its sedan sibling. That's not exactly a significant improvement, but it's something. With the Gravel mode switched on, the car rises an additional 0.4 of an inch, for a total increase of 1.2 inches. Buyers who opt for an SUV-style appearance package will find their Cross Turismo has the 1.2-inch increased ride height at all times.

Adaptive dampers and the air suspension intend to filter out the worst of any uneven road surfaces the Cross Turismo encounters while maintaining the Porsche-honed on-road handling expected to separate it from its competitors.
