2022 Land Rover Defender Gets New Trophy Edition
The new Land Rover Defender is a popular and award-winning SUV that retains the spirit of its predecessors while building on that legacy with new technology and capability. That philosophy will continue in 2022, as the automaker has just introduced a line of limited-production Defender Trophy Edition SUVs, a tribute to Land Rover’s off-road and expedition history.
The special edition Defender takes inspiration from the limited-run Defender Works V8 Trophy, a $300,000, 25-unit limited-production SUV. Where that model was built on a classic Defender 110 platform, this new model expands on the existing 2022 Defender 110 P400 X-Dynamic SE. The SUV carries a price tag of $69,350, but stepping up to the Trophy Edition drives that number to $91,350 – still, a far cry from the price tag Land Rover hung on the V8 model.
That money buys a four-door Defender that Land Rover upgrades with several off-road components:
- Skid plates
- Off-road tires
- Roof ladder and roof rack
- Integrated air compressor
- Air suspension
- Pre-wiring for winch
Where the original Trophy got a V8 engine, Land Rover has opted to stick with the Defender’s existing inline-six, which produces 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. The automaker offers a supercharged V8 in the 2022 Defender, but it won’t be on the order sheet for the new Trophy Edition. No two-door Defender 90 models will be offered with the Trophy Edition package, either.
Anyone lucky enough to snag one of the 220 vehicles in the limited run will also have the chance to compete in Land Rover’s Trophy Competition, which will take place at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, in October. Professional drivers and instructors will be on hand to help owners hone their skills in their own vehicles before they take to the trails. The overall winner will be invited to the U.K. to compete in an adventure competition at Eastnor Castle.
The 2022 Defender Trophy Edition will go on sale in August and will carry a base price of $90,000 before a $1,350 destination fee is applied. Hopeful buyers will need to find a participating dealer, as Land Rover says that only a few of its U.S. stores will offer the vehicle.
