Ford Gives Some Maverick Buyers Free AWD
The Ford Maverick’s release date isn’t even here yet, and there are already thousands of buyers lined up for the chance to own one. As it has done with the Bronco SUV and Mustang Mach-E SUV releases, Ford has taken pre-orders for the Maverick, but now it appears there may be a problem with one of the available configurations. Initially, buyers could opt for a front-wheel-drive (FWD) hybrid version of the truck with a 4K Towing package, which beefed up its radiator and added a tow hitch. However, now the automaker has removed that combination from its order guide and is barring dealers from taking further orders.
A user in a thread on the Maverick Truck Club forum was the first to note the change. The user, named “coolhip33,” stated that they ordered the 2.0-liter EcoBoost-equipped Maverick with FWD and the optional 4K towing package, which increases towing capacity to 4,000 pounds. The user later amended their post: “Updated: Just notified we have to buy AWD.” Shortly after that, the user stated that “Ford is going to pay for the AWD on our order.”
Another post from the same user came with an attached dealer bulletin from Ford, stating that around 500 customers with similarly configured trucks will need the upgrade. In the bulletin, Ford says that after “engineering and performance evaluations,” it decided to remove the 4K Towing package from FWD models. The package adds a beefier radiator, hitch, and 7-pin connector.
Ford offers three options to dealers to assist customers with their orders:
- Reorder the truck to include AWD, which increases the price by $2,220
- Re-spec without the 4K towing package, leaving the truck with a 2,000-pound capacity
- Cancel the order
If buyers choose the first option, Ford will add the upgrade, which would typically run $2,200, at no extra cost. The bulletin states that the automaker is “offering $2,220 Open Bonus Cash to cover the cost difference from FWD to AWD ($2,220 MSRP) should customers choose to upgrade to the 22MY Maverick Gas AWD with the 4K Towing Package.”
This was the right thing for buyers with orders for a FWD Maverick model but didn’t change anything for those already on the hook for an AWD model with the towing package. It is no longer possible to configure a Maverick with FWD and the towing package online, and the dealer bulletin states that the combination has been off the books for dealers since mid-August.
