Free Charging for Volkswagen ID.4 Part of Deal with Electrify America

Liz Kim | Sep 21, 2020

Volkswagen announced a deal with Electrify America that will give owners of the automaker’s all-new electric SUV, the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4, access to free charging. Whether customers purchase or lease the ID.4, the free charging offer is available for any Electrify America charging station during the first three years of ownership.

Scott Keogh, CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, said in a statement: “By adding three years of fast charging at no additional cost through Electrify America, we are eliminating all barriers for mainstream compact SUV buyers to go electric.”

The Volkswagen ID.4 is the first of Volkswagen’s planned range of new electric vehicles. Volkswagen will initially build the crossover SUV in Germany, then transfer production to Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 2022. Volkswagen says the ID.4 will offer 250 miles of range.

Electrify America is one of the most prominent players in EV charging infrastructure, with 470 stations and over 2,000 DC fast chargers nationwide. You could go on a cross-country trip with your new VW ID.4, driving from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles on a route dotted with Electrify America charging stations. Plus, it’s the only network to offer chargers with power levels up to 350 kilowatts.

According to Electrify America, 96% of the U.S. population lives within 120 miles of one of its charging stations. By the end of 2021, Electrify America will nearly double its network size, bringing the total count to about 800 charging stations and 3,500 fast chargers.
