Genesis G70, GV70 Earn Top Safety Award

Genesis has been on a roll since its spin-off from the Hyundai brand to form its own standalone brand. The South Korean premium automaker offers a small but refined lineup of sedans and SUVs, all of which earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Today, the IIHS announced that the 2022 Genesis G70 sedan and all-new Genesis GV70 had also earned the accolade.

The Top Safety Pick+ awards for the G70 and GV70 give Genesis the rare bragging right of having its entire lineup covered by the coveted safety recognition. The G70 and G90 sedans earned the award earlier in the year. The G80 and G90 earned the designation in both 2019 and 2020, and the GV80 picked up the award earlier this year after its debut.

All five Genesis models come standard with a long list of advanced driving assistance systems, including forward-collision assistance with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and more. Rear-view cameras, a head-up display, reverse automatic braking, and a remote smart parking system are available.

At the beginning of the 2021 model year, the IIHS noted that Volvo was the single automaker with the most Top Safety Pick+ awards, picking up a total of nine. However, Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, earned a whopping 12 Top Safety Picks and five Top Safety Pick+ awards.

To qualify for a Top Safety Pick+ designation, a vehicle must pass all IIHS crash tests with the highest score of Good. In addition, the vehicle must earn Superior or Advanced ratings for both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian crash-prevention settings. The IIHS adjusted its criteria in 2020 for the Top Safety Pick+ so that every trim level of a model must earn a Good or Acceptable rating for headlights instead of one trim or version of a car.
