Hyundai Confirms 2022 Hyundai Kona N Details

Hyundai has taken the wraps off the upcoming 2022 Hyundai Kona N small performance SUV. Well, almost.

Hyundai Europe issued a press release that confirms some details about the Kona N that arrives in the European market soon, but the accompanying photography shows the speedy little SUV in a camouflage body wrap. Still, we were able to glean many details about the variant that could join the Hyundai lineup here in the United States as part of Hyundai’s N high-performance sub-brand build-out.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona N will be the first SUV in the N lineup, but Hyundai officials have yet to confirm that it will be available in the U.S. If it makes the trip across the pond, the Kona N will join the automaker’s other N models including the Veloster N and the soon-to-be-introduced Elantra N. The all-new 2021 Elantra lineup was just named North American Car of the Year for 2021.

Significant Performance Potential - Find the best Hyundai deals!

If the Hyundai Kona N comes to pass, it will offer significant performance in the small crossover category. In European trim, the vehicle has a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that could provide as much as 275 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. That would put it on par with the currently available 2021 Veloster N.

It is unlikely that a U.S.-spec Kona N would have the Veloster N’s standard 6-speed manual transmission. Instead, it will likely use the 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, known as N DCT, that is standard in the European Kona N.

Current Hyundai Konas come with front-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations. While AWD might be valuable in getting the Kona N’s power to the pavement, the Kona N is likely to be a front-drive model with a drivetrain very similar to today’s Veloster N.

Appearance to Match Performance - Find the best Hyundai deals!

As one would expect, the Kona N will have aggressive body cladding, a spoiler, and other appearance items. Larger wheels clad with performance tires are almost certainly part of the offering as well.

Should the Kona N model come to America, expect it to arrive with a planned 2022 Kona lineup refresh.
