J.D. Power Best Resale Value Awards Given to 25 Models in 2020 Study

Christian Wardlaw | Nov 04, 2020

J.D. Power has announced the results of its 2020 study of vehicle resale values, and this year Honda and Toyota lead the industry with five awards each. The best-performing vehicle overall is the GMC Sierra 3500.

Now in its third year, the J.D. Power Best Resale Value Awards measure vehicles that are three years old. For the 2020 program, J.D. Power assessed 270 models from the 2017 model year, examining 592,000 vehicle sales transactions between May and September of 2020. J.D. Power bases the awards on used vehicle wholesale prices, divided by the original purchase price.

“Our transaction database shows which models have the lowest depreciation costs, hence providing consumers with a key component in the total cost of ownership of the vehicle they plan to purchase or sell,” said Jonathan Banks, vice president and general manager of vehicle valuations at J.D. Power.

Listed below, you’ll find the award winners in each of the 25 vehicle segments included in the J.D. Power 2020 Resale Value Awards program. They are grouped by primary vehicle type, with individual segments and the award winner listed within each type classification. Click the links to read reviews of the cars.

How to Use This Best Resale Value Information - Find the best car deals!

Remember, J.D. Power gives these resale value awards to vehicles that are three years old. If you own one of these models, you will benefit from high resale values when you sell your car, truck, or SUV. If you’re in the market for a used vehicle, you’ll need to pay more for one of these models than you might for an alternative.

If you’re shopping for a new car, these resale value awards are instructive if the model you’re considering has not changed substantially in the past three years. For example, today’s Honda Civic is much the same as it was in 2017. Additionally, be sure to review the J.D. Power resale value awards from 2019 and 2018 to see if you can find consistent patterns that apply to a new-vehicle purchase.
