New 2022 Audi S3 Promises Serious Performance

Liz Kim | Aug 11, 2020

Photos and specifications of the all-new 2022 Audi S3 have been announced, detailing the performance-tuned version of the redesigned Audi A3. Based on the information revealed for the European market, we can make educated guesses as to what this means for the U.S. market.

Europeans get the new Audi S3 in Sportback (hatchback) and sedan body styles, though Americans are likely to see only the latter in showrooms. A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 306 horsepower (228 kW) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400 Nm), fed to all four wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic with electronic controls and standard Quattro all-wheel drive.

The engine supplies 18 more horsepower and 15 more lb.-ft. of torque than the outgoing Audi S3, which accelerated to 60 mph in a claimed 4.6 seconds. Audi says the new S3 should zoom from zero to 60 mph in about the same amount of time. Fuel economy, however, is expected to improve over the current car’s rating of 25 mpg in combined driving.

Bigger than the current model, the new Audi S3 sedan grows 1.6 inches in length and 1.4 inches in width. Visually, it differs from the standard A3 with a reworked front end including a black front grille, sporty styling treatments, and unique wheels. The S3’s standard sport suspension also lowers the body by more than half an inch compared to the A3, and adaptive dampers will be available as an upgrade.

Inside, special badges and materials including aluminum and carbon trim distinguish the S3 from the A3. The electronic transmission controls are new, with a separate Park button and what appears to be an oversized toggle switch to run through RNDL. Cargo volume measures 13.1 cubic feet, according to Audi.

A 10.25-inch infotainment screen is standard, powered by Audi’s new MIB 3 infotainment platform. Audi also offers numerous driving assistance and collision avoidance technologies for the S3, including Swerve Assist (evasive steering assistance) with Turn Assist (prevents turning left when traffic is approaching). Additional features include front and rear cross-traffic assistance, a parking assistance system, Audi Virtual Cockpit instrumentation, a head-up display, ambient cabin lighting, matrix LED headlights, red brake calipers, and larger 19-inch wheels.

Reports forecast that Audi won’t offer the redesigned A3 in the U.S. until the summer of 2021, so the S3 will arrive sometime after that. Of course, by then, we might also be hearing more about a replacement for the top-performance RS 3 model to tempt your wallet.
