New BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Earns Impressive Crash Test Ratings from IIHS

Liz Kim | Oct 22, 2020

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, which is actually a small four-door sedan. The car receives impressive ratings for its ability to prevent a crash and protect its passengers from injury should a collision occur. However, it does not get a “Top Safety Pick” designation from the organization.

With a mark of “Good” in all six IIHS crash-test evaluations, which examine frontal- and side-impact protection as well as roof strength and head restraint performance tests, the 2 Series Gran Coupe proves its ability to protect its occupants. Furthermore, the IIHS marks both the standard and upgraded collision prevention systems as “Superior” for their ability to prevent crashes from occurring in the first place.

However, the IIHS says it cannot award the entry-level BMW with a “Top Safety Pick” or “Top Safety Pick+” designation because the car’s headlight illumination performance does not meet specific criteria. The 2 Series Gran Coupe’s base-level headlamps get a “Marginal” rating, while the glare thrown from the car’s upgraded adaptive headlamps results in a markdown to a “Poor” rating.

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe debuted for the 2020 model year. It competes with small luxury sedans like the Audi A3 and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, and it boasts standard all-wheel drive. A turbocharged 228-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine powers the 228i xDrive, while the M235i xDrive offers enhanced performance with a 301-horsepower engine, a sport-tuned suspension, and upgraded brakes.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and BMW are the sources of information in this article. It was accurate on October 22, 2020, but it may have changed since that date.
