New Genesis GV60 Electric SUV Coming Next Year
Despite being a relative newcomer to the auto industry, Genesis has made a name for itself with striking, value-forward models as comfortable and upscale as those from far more established rivals. The automaker’s latest creation is the GV60 electric SUV, a model that marks a departure from its previous SUVs and demonstrates Genesis’ vision of its electrified future.
The GV60 is Genesis’ first electric vehicle (EV) based on its dedicated E-Global Modular Platform. The automaker’s design language was modified for the all-electric SUV and features quad headlamps, a stretched signature grille, and a narrower Genesis logo. It’s not difficult to see the inspiration for the GV60’s design in Genesis’ gas SUVs, the GV70 and GV80. Still, the vehicle’s shape and proportions give it a more EV-appropriate futuristic look than its two internal combustion engine-powered counterparts.
Around the back, the GV60 features “two-line” rear lighting features and a fixed rear wing spoiler. Genesis says that the vehicle’s fastback shape is most apparent when viewed from the side and notes that it shaped the GV60’s roof and pillar to “embody the image of ‘electric.’” Electric door handles automatically extend and retract as the driver approaches the vehicle.
Inside, Genesis designed the GV60’s cabin with an eye on its “Beauty of White Space” design philosophy. The automaker focuses on creating a spacious and comfortable interior while retaining exciting design features, such as a floating center console and clean dash layout. A unique “Crystal Sphere” component in the console provides ambient interior lighting when the vehicle is off. When the GV60 is on, the sphere rotates to allow the driver to use the vehicle’s shift-by-wire system.
Genesis simplified its traditional dash designs for the GV60. All that’s left is a digital driver information display/gauge cluster and a large infotainment touchscreen. Physical buttons remain for climate controls, but all audio, video, navigation, and telecommunications functions are handled through the GV60’s displays. The rest of the front cockpit area features a clean design intended to maximize the feeling of openness.
Genesis has not released pricing details but says that more information will be available closer to the GV60’s expected launch date. The vehicle is currently scheduled to hit dealers’ lots in 2022.
