Rumors Surface About a 2021 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo

Liz Kim | Aug 24, 2020

Mazda only recently confirmed that it will offer a turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine in the 2021 Mazda3, attaching a 2.5 Turbo nameplate to the 250-horsepower compact car. The latest grist for the Mazda rumor mill involves the same turbocharged engine but applied to the popular CX-30 compact SUV.

Should early reports prove accurate, this would certainly resolve the CX-30’s lethargy while creating one of the most powerful (and expensive) small SUVs on the market.

Currently, the Mazda CX-30 offers a 186-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, the same one you’ll find under the hoods of many of the automaker’s cars and SUVs. That’s healthy output in comparison to most small SUVs, but it isn’t enough to give a CX-30’s driver the kind of acceleration that can thrill a person.

Enter the possibility of a 2021 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo, which a leaked dealer order guide claims will arrive in November 2020. This turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder is no stranger to owners of the Mazda6, Mazda CX-5, and Mazda CX-9

New to the 2021 Mazda3 and, now, expected in the 2021 Mazda CX-30, it makes 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque, but only with 93-octane gas. Using regular 87 octane drops the figures to 227 hp and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. Still, that represents a significant improvement over the normally aspirated 2.5-liter. The turbocharged engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

Reportedly, the 2021 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo will come only with the top Premium trim level. That pegs the base price for the speedy subcompact SUV at about $32,000.
