The Friday Five:The Big, Bigger, and Biggest Spender Edition

Liz Kim | Apr 02, 2021

This week, we reported new money-saving technology from Hyundai, Lexus electrification plans, and Volvo safety ratings. We explained what makes BMW iDrive 8 special and how a dual-clutch transmission works. We shared details of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz, 2022 Kia EV6, and 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness. We compared the Honda Accord vs. the Toyota Camry. And we reviewed a Buick Encore GX and Buick Enclave.

But that’s not everything that was happening in the automotive space.

Genesis X Concept Represents Electrified Opulence - Find the best Genesis deals!

Genesis introduced its X Concept coupe this week, and gracious, it is stunning. While Genesis released no exact details of the electric vehicle, sometimes an image just speaks for itself (see above). This mysterious coupe with its opulent lines is as sexy as any European exotic, with a pleasingly posh interior to match.

Ford Bronco Easter Safari Custom Builds - Find the best Ford deals!

Closer to reality, Ford introduced some 2021 Bronco-based custom-build collaborations with aftermarket equipment companies, which is sure to start a fire in the wallets of off-road enthusiasts with money to spend.

Shown as part of the Easter Safari boulder-bashing party in Moab, Utah, each of these modified Broncos boasts unique front and rear bumpers, rock-reach tires, and can’t-miss graphics. Additionally, they feature items like a Project X lightbar for the Bronco built by RTR Vehicles and special rock rails and skid plates for the ARB 4x4 Accessories project. The 4 Wheel Parts Bronco boasts customized light mounts, roof rack, and suspension tuning.

Land Rover Debuts an Ultimate Range Rover - Find the best Land Rover deals!

Just in case a Land Rover Range Rover isn’t opulent enough for your rear-seat passengers, the British carmaker introduces the SVAutobiography Ultimate.

Priced at $219,850 (including a $1,350 destination charge) and designed by the SV Bespoke team, it comes only in long-wheelbase form. This means rear-seat passengers get more than 46 inches of legroom, ensuring they’ll enjoy the reclining, heated, and cooled seats with footrests and a hot stone massage feature.

And when they’re tired of all the chillaxin’? They can fold down the tray table and pull the fancy mustard out of the refrigerated compartment inside of the center console.

GMC Hummer 001 Sells for $2.5M - Find the best GMC deals!

The annual Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, never disappoints when it comes to demonstrating how special vehicles can fetch top dollars.

That was on full display when a buyer plunked down $2.5 million for the very first example of the hotly anticipated GMC Hummer EV, which General Motors is donating to charity. Meanwhile, the very first Ford Bronco off the line for retail sales got a bid of just over $1 million.

In all, the auction raised $5 million for charities.

Massive Infrastructure Plan

Most of these stories are about feeling spendy. The Biden Administration is right there with them, introducing a massive $2 trillion infrastructure bill to fix some of what ails America.

Of particular interest in the “American Jobs Plan” is the priority to reduce climate change-causing emissions in the transportation sector. Promoting the switch to electric vehicles and its necessary charging network accounts for $174 billion of the plan, while $100 million is earmarked for strengthening America’s power grid.

To fix the roads and bridges upon which these vehicles will travel, the plan calls for $115 billion to update and improve 20,000 miles of roads and more than 10,000 bridges.

Congress will consider these proposals in the coming weeks, and the White House hopes that some of these proposals will pass by Memorial Day.
