The Friday Five:The Orange TRX, Sellout Lyriq, and “Cheap” EQS Edition

Beverly Braga | Sep 24, 2021

This week, Ford confirmed last week’s short-lived Bronco Raptor rumor—expect the bucking dino to go into production next year. Not too far from Dearborn, the revamped Detroit Auto Show (dubbed Motor Bella) is in full swing. We previewed the latest 2022 model debuts, including the Acura RDXFord ExpeditionHonda Passport (plus a rugged Trailsport model), and Toyota Tundra. Also announced was pricing for the all-new Honda Civic hatchback and that Chevy Bolt battery production has resumed (presumably without the fire risk).

We also reviewed the new 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross and featured the BMW X5 and Lexus RX in a midsize crossover comparison. Speaking of BMW, we explained what xDrive is and clarified what the long-winded Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system includes.

But that’s not everything that was happening in the automotive space.

New Ram 1500 Special Editions Include Orange TRX - Find the best Ram deals!

2022 Ram 1500 TRX Ignition Edition Orange Front Quarter View

Ram has announced a trio of new special-edition 1500 pickups. These are the TRX Ignition Edition, Longhorn SouthFork Edition, and (RED) Edition. None receive changes to their respective drivetrains, but each does make a statement. All three will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2021.

The boldest offering is the TRX Ignition. Limited to 875 units, the truck features an Ignition paint job (i.e., very orange), a set of black wheels, a spray-in bedliner, a panoramic sunroof, as well as contrast stitching and copper carbon-fiber accents in the cabin.

The 1500 (RED) Edition is part of a Ram, Jeep, and Fiat partnership with the global fund dedicated to fighting health emergencies. Available as a Limited Crew Cab with either a V8 or EcoDiesel engine, the (RED) Edition features special red-colored badging throughout.

The 1500 SouthFork Edition replaces the Limited Longhorn 10th Anniversary truck. An exclusive Mountain Brown interior color decks out the premium cabin. The SouthFork also is equipped with added utility, including a multi-function tailgate, spray-in bedliner, and cargo divider.

Cadillac Lyriq Reservations Sold Out in 10 Minutes - Find the best Cadillac deals!

When Cadillac opened order banks for the 2023 Lyriq crossover, reservations for the Debut Edition sold out in, oh, about 10 minutes. According to the automaker, more than 200,000 people “expressed interest” and plunked down a refundable $100 deposit for a chance to own Caddy’s first-ever full-battery EV.

Starting at $58,795 (before destination), the Lyriq will offer 340 horsepower, 325 pound-feet of torque, and an estimated 300 miles range. Production will begin during the first half of 2022. Those who missed out on that 10-minute window can try again… next summer.

Takata Airbag Recall Could Add 30 Million More Vehicles

Since 2014, more than 67 million Takata airbags have been recalled in the United States and more than 100 million globally. So widespread, the U.S. recall accounted for more than 42 million vehicles built by 19 automakers between 2002 and 2015. And now, the largest auto safety recall in history could grow even larger.

According to Reuters, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an engineering investigation covering vehicles as early as the 2001 model year to as late as 2019. The new probe is estimated to include more than 30 million vehicles and more than two dozen automakers. The report states that the airbags involved include those with faulty inflators installed at manufacturing and during prior recall repairs.

Per the NHTSA, approximately 50 million of the 67 million recalled U.S. airbags have been repaired or accounted for. Nineteen deaths and more than 400 injuries have been attributed to Takata airbags.

Mercedes-Benz EQS Starting Price is Less Than S-Class - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

The all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS may be S-Class in size but not in price. In the U.S., the base model, dubbed Premium, will start at $102,310 (before destination). The mid-level Exclusive begins at $105,710, and the top-trim Pinnacle begins at $108,510. Note that starting prices are for the 450+ sedan. The other option is the 580 4Matic sedan with the Premium version starting at $119,110. And that’s where the bewildering 56-inch MBUX Hyperscreen becomes standard.

The S-Class doesn’t get that. Not now, not ever. Because the techs and cars don’t jive. And yet, the 2022 S-Class 500 4Matic starts at $111,100 while the 580 4Matic climbs up to $117,700. You get a turbocharged inline-6 that produces 429 hp and 384 pound-feet of torque (500) or a twin-turbo V8 with 496 hp (580). Both have sub-5-second zero-to-60 mph times.

The EQS 450+ offers 329 hp and 419 pound-feet of torque and takes about 6 seconds to reach 60 mph. The EQS 580 4Matic, however, boasts 516 hp and 631 pound-feet of torque with a zero-to-60 time closer to 4 seconds flat.

Ford Mustang Mach-E the Police Cruiser of the Future? - Find the best Ford deals!

Don’t look now, but a state trooper in a Mustang could pull you over. A Mustang Mach-E, to be exact. According to Autoweek, the Michigan State Police are evaluating the EV crossover for police duty.

Ford, of course, is no stranger to protecting and serving with a law enforcement fleet ranging from the legendary Crown Vics to the new-school Explorer-based Interceptor Utility SUVs and F-150 Police Responder trucks. Ford recently unveiled a police-variant Mustang Mach-E for the U.K., so a U.S. version might not be far behind.
