The MDX represented Acura's first all-out assault in the premium crossover utility vehicle marketplace. While Acura had gained access to the sport utility vehicle in 1995 with the Isuzu-derived SLX, the MDX was based completely on Honda engineering magnified to the high-end expectations of their luxury name. Debuting in 2001, the first generation Acura MDX featured a seven-passenger cabin and standard all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive would remain standard on the Acura MDX until the 2014 model year where a front-wheel drive became available. A 3.5-liter V-6 engine powered the 2001 Acura MDX producing 240 horsepower. Engine power was increased to 265 horsepower by the 2003 model year. A complete redesign of the Acura MDX incorporated a safety-focused ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure and a new 3.7-liter V-6 engine. Following a mild styling refresh adding the Power Plenum grille in 2010, the Acura MDX next major redesign came for 2014 that included a direct-injected V-6 engine. A major revision to the Acura MDX is in store for 2017 with a completely new grille design and the availability of an all-new Sport Hybrid.
