2021 Ram 1500 TRX Hellcat V-8 Brings Big Power, Performance

Christian Wardlaw | Sep 04, 2020

If you’ve ever wanted a new Ram 1500 Hellcat without needing to build it yourself, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is going to scratch that itch for you starting next year. The new 2021 Ram 1500 TRX has a Hellcat Hemi under it’s bulging, scooped hood, and while this performance-tuned truck is built to blast across Mexico’s Baja Peninsula without requiring pavement, it is also remarkably adept on the blacktop of a drag strip. Just don’t expect much on a closed road course, unless that road course is composed of dirt, gravel, and mud.

2021 Ram 1500 TRX Hellcat V8 Action

In this application, the Ram 1500 TRX Hellcat 6.2-liter V-8 makes 702 supercharged horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 650 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm while slurping premium unleaded with a 91-octane rating. Run it on regular, and it won’t deliver quite the same level of thrust.

You’ll note that in this version of the Ram 1500, the Hellcat engine is making a little less horsepower than it does in the Dodge Challenger, Charger, and Durango, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. In fact, it’s up to eight horses off the pace, which FCA says is due to unique Ram 1500 Hellcat V-8 packaging requirements and the greater distance between the engine and the primary drive axle.

Nevertheless, this is one quick beast. Performance specifications for the 2021 Ram TRX are as follows:

  • 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds
  • 0-100 mph in 10.5 seconds
  • Quarter-mile time of 12.9 seconds at 108 mph

Granted, top speed is just 118 mph, which FCA says is due to the Goodyear Wrangler Territory 325/60R18 all-terrain 35-inch tires. But, at the same time, those tires, in combination with the TRX’s modified suspension, allow for triple-digit speeds out in the desert. Try that in your Grand Cherokee Hellcat.

To keep the Ram 1500 TRX Hellcat V-8 cool and clean in that environment, a dual-path air induction system feeds the engine through the grille and hood scoop. Each supplies half of the necessary volume of air, which passes through the largest air filter of any light-duty full-size truck. Dual-filter elements are designed for extreme dust, and Ram claims they offer four times the filtration capacity of the next best model.

Power flows through a high-torque-capacity 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and a full-time active 4-wheel-drive system with a strengthened transfer case. At the rear, the Ram 1500 TRX employs a Dana 60 solid rear axle with a 3.55 ratio, full floating hubs, an axle-hop damping system, and an electronic locking rear differential.

A Launch Control system ensures maximum acceleration when desired, and the Ram 1500 TRX offers multiple driver-selected driving modes. They include a new Baja mode, as well as Auto, Sport, Mud/Sand, Rock, Snow, and Tow. This Ram 1500 Hellcat engine can tow up to 8,100 pounds, and the truck is rated for 1,310 pounds of payload.

Among full-size off-road performance trucks, the new 2021 Ram 1500 TRX sets new standards. With a redesigned 2021 Ford F-150 arriving soon, it will be interesting to see if the next-generation Raptor will have what it takes to vanquish Ram’s T-Rex.
