2022 Ford Bronco vs. 2022 Jeep Wrangler Comparison

Erin Riches-Wong | May 13, 2022

If you're planning to drive off-road in your next vehicle, the 2022 Ford Bronco and 2022 Jeep Wrangler are obvious candidates. Even in stock form, these SUVs can take on rough terrain. And most versions are compact enough to fit all but the narrowest two-track trails.

Should you buy the Ford or the Jeep? Both SUVs have an iconic design, but the newer Ford Bronco looks fresher inside and out. The Bronco is also more pleasant to drive on pavement. On the other hand, the Jeep Wrangler's off-road credentials are undeniable. The Wrangler also has a more diverse engine lineup that includes a diesel V6, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, and a mighty powerful gas V8.

Whether you're an experienced off-roader or just want to look the part, this 2022 Ford Bronco vs. 2022 Jeep Wrangler comparison will help you spot the key differences between these rugged sport utility vehicles.

Price and Value

2022 Ford Bronco

Consumers will find that the 2022 Ford Bronco ranges in price from $30,800 to $68,500, not including the $1,595 destination charge. Ford offers this midsize SUV in base, Big Bend, Black Diamond, Outer Banks, Badlands, Wildtrak, Everglades, and Raptor trim levels. Due to a production backlog, Ford is no longer taking customer orders for the 2022 Bronco, so unless you find an unclaimed one at a dealership, you'll be waiting until the 2023 model year. (The Bronco is unrelated to the Bronco Sport, which is based on Ford's Escape.)

Most Ford Bronco trims are available in either the 2-door body style with a short 100-inch wheelbase and seating for four or a more conventional 4-door configuration with a 116-inch wheelbase and 5-passenger seating. New for 2022, the Bronco Everglades, which has a snorkel intake and a front-bumper winch, and the Bronco Raptor, which has a wider body and track and even larger tires, come with four doors only.

All 2022 Ford Broncos are 4-wheel drive (4WD). Most trims offer a choice between a turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine and a turbocharged V6. The 2022 Bronco Raptor gets a high-performance version of the 3.0-liter turbo V6 used in the Ford Explorer ST and Lincoln Aviator.

Ford offers only a few connected services on the Bronco, but they're totally free. You can lock the doors and start the engine remotely via the FordPass app. And with 911 Assist enabled in the Bronco's Sync infotainment interface, you'll have automatic collision notification. The Wi-Fi hotspot has a 3-month complimentary trial. Ford does not offer free scheduled maintenance.

Expect strong resale value on the Ford Bronco. It's the highest-ranked model in the Off-Road Utility category of the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards.

Shoppers will find that the 2022 Jeep Wrangler ranges in price from $29,995 to $77,490, not including the $1,595 destination charge. Jeep offers its classic compact SUV in many trim levels, including Sport, Willys Sport, Sport S, Willys, Sport Altitude, Sahara, Rubicon, Sahara Altitude, High Tide, High Altitude, and Rubicon 392. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV comes in Sahara, Rubicon, and High Altitude trims.

Lower-trim 2022 Jeep Wranglers come in either the 2-door body style (97-inch wheelbase, seating for four) or the 4-door body style known as the Unlimited (118-inch wheelbase, seating for five). The higher trims are available only in the 4-door Unlimited configuration, as is the Wrangler plug-in hybrid.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler is a 4x4 exclusively. Available engines include a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, a naturally aspirated V6, and a turbocharged diesel V6. The diesel is costly and will appeal only to buyers who really want a diesel Jeep Wrangler. Meanwhile, the hybrid Wrangler 4xe uses the turbo 4-cylinder combined with two electric motors (and qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit), while the Wrangler Rubicon 392 has a 6.4-liter gas V8.

Most 2022 Wranglers offer SiriusXM Guardian connected services. Your one-year trial subscription includes automatic collision notification, live emergency assistance, rapid access to roadside services, stolen-vehicle assistance, and remote engine start and door locking. There's also a Wi-Fi hotspot with a 3-month introductory trial.

The Jeep Wave maintenance program provides three complimentary oil changes and tire rotations during your first three years of Wrangler ownership.

Reliability and Quality

The current-generation Ford Bronco is too new to have taken part in the J.D. Power 2022 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which details the problems experienced by owners during the third year of ownership. The Bronco does not rank among the top three Midsize SUV models in the J.D. Power 2021 Initial Quality Study (IQS). The 2022 Ford Bronco comes with the following warranty and roadside assistance coverage:

  • Standard warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty: 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Roadside assistance: 5 years or 60,000 miles

The Jeep Wrangler does not rank among the top three Compact SUVs in the 2022 VDS or the 2021 IQS. The 2022 Jeep Wrangler comes with the following warranty and roadside assistance coverage:

  • Standard warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty: 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Hybrid system warranty: 8 years or 100,000 miles
  • Hybrid battery warranty: 8 years or 100,000 miles (10 years or 150,000 miles in California emissions states)
  • Roadside assistance: 5 years or 60,000 miles (5 years or 100,000 miles with diesel engine)

Advantage: Neither

Ford and Jeep offer the same warranty coverage on vehicles with a conventional gasoline engine.

Performance and Efficiency

Lower-trim versions of the 2-door 2022 Ford Bronco come with a turbocharged 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine good for 275 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque on 87 octane (or a bit more if you refuel with premium) and a 7-speed manual transmission. The higher trims and all 4-door Broncos have a standard 10-speed automatic transmission.

If you require more power and torque, an available twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6 makes 315 hp and 410 pound-feet of torque on regular octane. It comes only with the 10-speed automatic. The Ford Bronco Raptor alone has a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 paired with a 10-speed automatic. As of this publication, Ford has not published power ratings for the Bronco Raptor, but it likely makes over 400 hp.

The Bronco's base 4WD system is part-time with 2 Hi, 4 Hi, and 4 Lo modes, but you can get a more deluxe system with an automatic 4WD mode. If you're serious about off-roading, consider the available Sasquatch package with a raised suspension (on 4-door Broncos, ground clearance increases from 8.3 to 11.5 inches), biggie-size 35-inch all-terrain tires, front and rear locking differentials, and a more aggressive (numerically higher) final drive ratio. The Bronco Badlands has a front stabilizer-bar disconnect feature to allow more wheel articulation.

Ford's Bronco Raptor has 13 inches of ground clearance, specialized off-road shock absorbers, and gargantuan 37-inch tires. The Bronco Raptor is 6 inches wider than the Wildtrak and Everglades models, though, so it's better suited for fast runs across the sand than bending around tight switchbacks.

All 2022 Ford Broncos offer selectable terrain modes, but only select trims have Mud/Ruts, Rock Crawl, and Baja modes. If your Bronco has the automatic transmission, you'll also get the Ford Trail Toolbox, which includes Ford Trail Control (off-road cruise control), Trail One-Pedal Drive, and Trail Turn Assist.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates 2022 Broncos at 17-20 mpg in combined city and highway driving. The 2.3-liter and 2.7-liter engines return similar mileage but equipping the Sasquatch package results in lower mpg. The EPA has not yet published fuel-economy ratings for the Bronco Raptor.

Consumers shopping for a 2022 Jeep Wrangler have lots of powertrain options. There's a base 3.6-liter V6 with 285 hp and 265 pound-feet of torque. It comes with a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic.

If you're getting the automatic, you'll find that it's fairly inexpensive to upgrade to the eTorque version of the V6. With eTorque, a belt-driven electric motor powers the Wrangler's electrical system. Benefits include smoother start/stop system operation, better fuel economy, and slightly more low-end torque. Alternatively, Wrangler buyers wanting an automatic transmission can save money by selecting the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, which makes 270 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque and has eTorque standard.

The plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler 4xe also uses this 4-cylinder engine along with an electric motor built into its specialized 8-speed automatic transmission. The motor draws power from a 17.3-kWh battery pack. Total output is 375 hp and 470 pound-feet of torque.

Diesel Jeep Wranglers have a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that's good for 260 hp and 442 pound-feet of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission is standard. Finally, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 has Stellantis's famed 6.4-liter V8 (that's 392 cubic inches). The V8 churns out 470 hp and 470 pound-feet of torque. It uses the same 8-speed automatic as the diesel.

The 2022 Wrangler has three main 4WD systems: a part-time 4WD system, the more deluxe Selec-Trac system with automatic 4WD, and the Rock-Trac system exclusive to the Wrangler Rubicon and hybrid Wrangler 4xe Rubicon (the Rubicon 392 has Selec-Trac). There are two versions of Rock-Trac: a part-time system and an optional version with automatic 4WD. Any of these systems will get you to work on a winter day, but Rock-Trac has the lowest gearing for off-roading. Four-door Wranglers with an automatic transmission have Selec-Speed Control off-road cruise control.

The Wrangler Rubicon is the closest equivalent to the Bronco's Sasquatch package. It has a lower (numerically higher) final drive ratio, front and rear locking differentials, front stabilizer-bar disconnect, and 10.8 inches of ground clearance. Optional on the Rubicon and Willys Sport (and standard on the High Tide), the Xtreme Recon package provides an even lower final drive, 12.9 inches of clearance, 35-inch off-road tires, and beadlock-capable wheels. For now, you can't get this package on the Wrangler Rubicon 392 or Wrangler 4xe Rubicon.

Compared to the Ford, the Jeep has comically slow steering and often feels out of its element during highway travel. But the Wrangler is more fuel-efficient. Combined fuel-economy ratings are 23-25 mpg with the diesel, 22-23 mpg with the 4-cylinder, and 19-21 mpg with the V6 (though expect lower ratings with the Xtreme Recon package). The heavier Wrangler 4xe PHEV rates just 20 mpg combined but is EPA-rated for 21 miles of pure electric range. The Rubicon 392 rates 14 mpg combined.

Safety and Driving Assistance

Every 2022 Ford Bronco comes with a standard Ford Co-Pilot 360 package of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) that includes a forward-collision warning (FCW) system with automatic emergency braking (AEB) and pedestrian detection.

Starting on the Big Bend trim level, you can get an upgraded package with a blind-spot warning (BSW) system with rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning (LDW), and lane-keeping assistance (LKA). Adaptive cruise control (ACC) and evasive steering assistance (ESA) are available on the Outer Banks trim and up.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released partial safety ratings for the 2022 Ford Bronco. The 4-door model rates 4 stars for frontal-impact crash protection; both body styles have a 3-star rollover rating. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) testing, the structurally similar 2021 Bronco 4-door earned the highest-possible Good ratings in all major crash-test categories.

Consumers will find that ADAS is optional on most 2022 Jeep Wranglers. One package has FCW, AEB, and ACC. Another package has BSW with rear cross-traffic warning. The above aids are standard on the Rubicon 392.

The NHTSA has released only partial crash-test results for the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. It rates 4 stars for frontal-impact crash protection and has a 3-star rollover rating. In IIHS testing, the 2022 Wrangler Unlimited earned Good ratings for its performance in moderate-overlap front-offset and side-impact crashes. The Institute did not evaluate the Wrangler in the small-overlap frontal-offset category.

Infotainment and Technology

Every 2022 Ford Bronco has Ford's latest Sync 4 infotainment platform, notable for its wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration and over-the-air update capability. An 8-inch touchscreen display is standard. A 12-inch touchscreen display is optional on most trims (standard on Raptor), as is a factory navigation system with conversational voice-recognition technology (requires a subscription). All 2022 Broncos have two rear-seat USB ports.

You'll want to skip over the base 2022 Jeep Wrangler Sport, which has a basic 5-inch audio display. All other Jeep Wranglers have the UConnect 4 infotainment platform, which is known for its user-friendly interface but lacks the features and processing power of Ford's Sync 4. Depending on the trim level, your 2022 Wrangler will have a 7-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen display with wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. Jeep includes factory navigation with the 8.4-inch display. Some 2022 Wranglers have rear-seat USB ports.

Comfort and Utility

2022 Jeep Wrangler Sahara

The 2022 Ford Bronco and 2022 Jeep Wrangler are adventure vehicles at heart. Both are available with either a soft, convertible-type top or a removable hardtop. You can remove the doors during off-road adventures, and Jeep offers half doors for carefree summer driving. Both SUVs offer rubberized flooring with drain plugs.

The Ford Bronco Black Diamond, Badlands, and Raptor are available with marine-grade vinyl seat upholstery that resists mildew when it gets wet.

Both SUVs have an upright dash design characteristic of focused off-road vehicles. Unquestionably, though, the Bronco's interior looks more modern than the Wrangler's, and you're likely to find its driving position more ergonomic and comfortable. The shorter-wheelbase 2-door models are more maneuverable off-road, but you'll appreciate having rear doors and adequate legroom in the back seat if you have kids.

Neither of these SUVs has an overhead liftgate as you'll find on crossover SUVs. Instead, a side-hinged lower gate (with a full-size spare tire mounted on it) swings from left to right. It's not convenient for curbside loading, so you'll want to use the flip-up rear glass whenever possible.

The Ford has more cargo space. Four-door Broncos have 35.6 cubic feet (38.3 with the soft top) behind their rear seats and 77.6 cubic feet (83.0 with soft top) with the rear seats folded. The Wrangler Unlimited has 31.7 cubic feet (27.7 on the 4xe PHEV) behind its rear seats and 72.4 cubic feet (67.4 on 4xe) when they're folded.
