2022 Nissan Rogue vs. 2022 Toyota RAV4 Comparison

Erin Riches-Wong | Feb 07, 2022

If you're shopping for a compact SUV, you almost certainly have the 2022 Nissan Rogue and 2022 Toyota RAV4 on your list of candidates. Together, these two crossover SUVs accounted for nearly 700,000 vehicle sales in 2021.

Both SUV models offer a right-sized package of space and conveniences. The Nissan Rogue typically ranks high for value in this class. A 2021 redesign delivered an upgraded cabin with a leading-edge infotainment interface, and for the 2022 model year it gets a powerful and fuel-efficient new turbocharged engine. Meanwhile, the Toyota RAV4 is still a top all-around pick in the compact SUV class, and it's one of the few models available in both hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions.

Whatever your priorities, this 2022 Nissan Rogue vs. 2022 Toyota RAV4 comparison will help you sort through the details that matter.

Price and Value

2022 Nissan Rogue

Consumers researching the 2022 Nissan Rogue will find that it comes in S, SV, SL, and Platinum trim levels. Pricing ranges from $26,700 to $36,480, not including the $1,225 destination charge. A new turbocharged 3-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive (FWD) are standard on all 2022 Rogue trim levels. All-wheel drive (AWD) is a $1,500 option. The global semiconductor chip shortage has delayed the start of 2022 Nissan Rogue sales, but you should be able to buy the 2022 version of Nissan's compact SUV by March 2022.

Nissan offers a wide range of connected services (known as NissanConnect Services) on all trim levels, except the base S. Features like remote locking, over-the-air updates, and maintenance notifications—and, on navigation-equipped vehicles, map updates and real-time traffic/weather data—are complimentary for the first five years that you own a Rogue.

Other features are free only for the first six months. This list includes automatic collision notification, live emergency assistance, rapid access to roadside assistance, and customizable geofencing settings for less trusted drivers. There's also a Wi-Fi hotspot with a 30-day trial period.

Nissan does not offer a complimentary scheduled maintenance program.

If you're shopping for a 2022 Toyota RAV4, you'll find that it comes in LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Adventure, TRD Off-Road, and Limited trim levels. The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid comes in LE, XLE, SE, XLE Premium, XSE, and Limited trim levels. Toyota offers the 2022 RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid in SE and XSE trim levels.

Toyota RAV4 pricing starts at $26,525 and tops out at $43,125, not including the $1,215 destination charge. The hybrid RAV4 starts at $29,075. The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime SE starts at $39,800, but a federal tax credit effectively lops off $7,500.

Non-hybrid 2022 Toyota RAV4s have a standard 4-cylinder engine. The LE, XLE, and Limited trim levels have standard FWD and optional AWD ($1,400). All other Toyota RAV4 models have standard AWD, including the RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime.

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime use a 4-cylinder engine with front and rear electric-drive motors. With its plug-in capability, the Prime has a larger battery pack and a more robust front electric-drive motor; it's the quickest member of the RAV4 family.

Every 2022 Toyota RAV4 comes with connected services. All trim levels give you 12 months of Safety Connect with automatic collision notification, live emergency assistance, and rapid access to roadside assistance, plus a 3-month trial for the Wi-Fi hotspot. Most RAV4s also have Remote Connect as standard or optional; it includes one year of remote locking and engine starting. The upper trim levels (XSE, TRD Off-Road, and Limited) offer one year of Destination Assist live concierge services.

Scheduled maintenance is on the house for the first 2 years or 25,000 miles that you own Toyota's compact SUV.

Advantage: Toyota RAV4

Reliability and Quality

The current-generation Nissan Rogue was redesigned for the 2021 model year and is too new to have been included in the J.D. Power 2021 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). The Rogue does not rank among the top three compact SUV models in the J.D. Power 2021 Initial Quality Study (IQS), but Nissan outranks Toyota in this study at the brand level. The 2022 Nissan Rogue comes with the following warranty and roadside assistance coverage:

  • Standard warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty: 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Roadside assistance: 3 years or 36,000 miles

The Toyota RAV4 ranks second among compact SUVs in the 2021 VDS. It does not rank among the top three models in the 2021 IQS. The 2022 Toyota RAV4 comes with the following warranty and roadside assistance coverage:

  • Standard warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty: 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Hybrid system warranty: 8 years or 100,000 miles
  • Hybrid battery warranty: 10 years or 150,000 miles
  • Roadside assistance: 2 years and unlimited miles

Advantage: Toyota RAV4

Performance and Efficiency

2022 Nissan Rogue

Every 2022 Nissan Rogue comes with a 3-cylinder version of Nissan's variable-compression, turbocharged (VC-Turbo) engine. The Rogue's 1.5-liter engine makes 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. Not only are these solid numbers for an engine with only three cylinders, but the engine's peak torque hits at just 2,800 rpm—ideal for driving in city traffic.

The standard continuously variable transmission (CVT) has simulated shift points to feel more like a conventional automatic transmission. The available AWD system features Snow and Off-Road modes, and the 2022 Rogue has a respectable 8.2 inches of ground clearance.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the front-wheel-drive 2022 Nissan Rogue at 33 mpg in combined city and highway driving (32 mpg combined for SL and Platinum trims). All-wheel-drive Nissan Rogues rate 31 mpg combined across the board.

The base powertrain for the 2022 Toyota RAV4 consists of a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 203 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque and an 8-speed automatic transmission. This combination nets a 3,500-pound tow rating—a respectable number for a base-engine compact SUV (the Rogue has a 1,500-pound rating).

All-wheel-drive RAV4s have selectable terrain modes. The upgraded, torque-vectoring AWD system on the Adventure, TRD Off-Road, and Limited trims offers superior grip with its ability to transfer engine torque side to side between the rear wheels.

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road comes with all-terrain tires and revised suspension tuning if you want to take it on the occasional dirt trail. The RAV4 has 8.4-8.6 inches of ground clearance, depending on the trim level.

You'll find a hybrid-specific version of the 2.5-liter engine on the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. On its own, the engine makes 176 hp and 163 pound-feet of torque. With the aid of the hybrid RAV4's electric motors, combined horsepower is 219. An electric motor functions as the transmission; this is known as an electric CVT (eCVT). Although AWD is standard, hybrid RAV4s have slightly less ground clearance (8.1 inches).

The 2.5-liter engine generates 177 hp and 165 pound-feet of torque in the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid. Combined horsepower is an impressive 302, thanks to the RAV4 PHEV's larger battery pack and more powerful front electric drive motor. As on the regular hybrid, the RAV4 Prime uses an eCVT.

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 with the base engine and FWD earns a 30-mpg rating in combined driving from the EPA. Depending on the trim level, you can expect 28-30 mpg combined with AWD. Keep in mind that the RAV4 TRD Off-Road will likely return slightly lower mpg than other RAV4s due to its all-terrain tires.

If fuel economy is the priority, you'll be happiest with one of the hybrid models. The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid rates 40 mpg combined. With the added weight of its larger battery pack, the Toyota RAV4 Prime rates just 38 mpg, but of course, it can travel an EPA-estimated 42 miles on electric power alone.

Advantage: Neither

A standard turbocharged engine makes the Nissan Rogue feel more responsive around town than the standard-engine RAV4. But if you want a hybrid SUV or PHEV, it's Toyota all the way.

Safety and Driving Assistance

Every 2022 Nissan Rogue comes with Nissan's Safety Shield 360 advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) package. It includes a forward-collision warning (FCW) system with automatic emergency braking (AEB) and pedestrian and cyclist detection, a blind-spot warning (BSW) system with rear cross-traffic warning, and lane-departure warning (LDW).

Starting at the SV trim level, the Rogue includes ProPilot Assist, a form of Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance known as a traffic jam assist (TJA) system. ProPilot Assist has adaptive cruise control (ACC) and lane-centering assistance. Rogues with a factory navigation system add traffic sign recognition and will automatically reduce speed for curves and freeway interchanges. The Rogue SV also picks up lane-keeping assistance (LKA) and blind-spot assistance (intervenes if you start a lane change when another vehicle is occupying your intended space).

All 2022 Nissan Rogues come with rear low-speed emergency braking.

The 2022 Rogue earned an overall National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash-test rating of 4 out of 5 stars. It earned 4 stars for frontal-impact crash safety and 5 stars for side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2021 Nissan Rogue its highest Top Safety Pick+ rating but has not yet released a rating for the 2022 Rogue, which is structurally similar but equipped with a different engine.

All versions of the 2022 Toyota RAV4 have the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS 2.0) package of ADAS as standard. The RAV4's TSS 2.0 has the same features as the Rogue's Safety Shield 360 package, plus lane-keeping assistance (LKA).

Toyota also offers its Level 2 TJA system as standard equipment, and all trim levels include traffic sign recognition. Higher trim levels have access to low-speed front and rear automatic braking to minimize parking lot incidents.

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 has a 5-star overall NHTSA crash-test rating, though Toyota's compact SUV earned 4 stars for frontal-impact crash safety. As of this writing, the IIHS had not released crash-test ratings for the 2022 RAV4. The Institute has published a partial set of ratings for the 2022 RAV4 Prime, which rates Good for small-overlap, frontal-offset crashes affecting the passenger side of the vehicle.

Advantage: Neither

Both the Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4 have you covered on the safety front.

Infotainment and Technology

Most 2022 Nissan Rogues come with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment interface with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. Nissan also includes throwbacks like a CD player and an auxiliary input jack. A 9-inch touchscreen interface is available on higher trim levels. It has wireless Apple CarPlay (you'll still need your cable for Android Auto) and a door-to-door navigation system that provides directions via smartphone app if you need to walk the last part of your journey. A wireless smartphone charging pad is standard on the Platinum trim level.

The base Rogue S includes one regular USB input and one USB-C input, and the SV trim adds one more of each variety.

The Nissan Rogue's infotainment interface earns high marks for ease of use. The 2021 model ranks third among small/compact SUVs in the J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Multimedia Quality and Satisfaction Study.

Toyota offers three different touchscreen infotainment displays on the 2022 Toyota RAV4. The lower trims have a 7-inch display, while the base RAV4 Prime SE has an 8-inch display. Higher-trim versions have a 9-inch display. All versions have standard wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto regardless of screen size. You can get a factory navigation system with the 9-inch display. A wireless charging pad is optional on the upper trims.

The base LE trim level comes with just one USB port, but all other 2022 Toyota RAV4s have six USB ports.

Advantage: Nissan Rogue

Comfort and Utility

2022 Toyota RAV4 XSE

The 2022 Nissan Rogue rates high for comfort. The front seats in the identical 2021 model rank highest among mass-market compact SUVs in the J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Seat Quality and Satisfaction Study. Upholstery options include cloth, simulated leather (leatherette), and leather.

All 2022 Nissan Rogue SUVs have rear-seat air-conditioning vents. The base S has manual air conditioning, but the SV has dual-zone automatic climate control, and the SL and Platinum have a triple-zone system with rear-seat controls. Rear side-window shades are available starting on the SV. Nissan also offers lower anchors (the "LA" in LATCH) in all three rear seats. This is a rare convenience in compact SUVs, though you'll still need very narrow car seats to achieve three across safely.

Most Nissan Rogues have a 31.6-cubic-foot cargo bay that expands to 76.1 cubic feet when you fold the rear seats. However, the cargo divider system in the SL and Platinum trims effectively lowers the floor and boosts the cargo area to 36.5 cubic feet. The SV has a power liftgate, and the SL and Platinum add hands-free access.

Most consumers will likely find the seats in the 2022 Toyota RAV4 comfortable, and the back seat is similarly roomy. Storage areas aren't large, but they're well designed, and materials quality is higher than in RAV4s of the past. Instead of offering leather upholstery, Toyota gives you a choice between cloth and its vegan-friendly SofTex simulated leather.

Among non-hybrid RAV4 models, the base LE does not have rear air-conditioning vents, but all other versions do. Automatic climate control is standard on the 2022 RAV4, and most trims have a dual-zone system.

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid offers just as much cargo space as the standard RAV4. You'll find 37.6 cubic feet behind the second row, and folding the rear seats opens up 69.8 cubic feet. The RAV4 Prime has a 33.5-cubic-foot cargo area, but seats-down capacity is the same as other RAV4 models. A power liftgate is available on most trims, and hands-free access is available on the higher trims.
