Changes to 2021 Acura Models Include Redesign of TLX, Launch of RDX PMC Edition

Erin Riches-Wong | Nov 23, 2020

The biggest news on the list of 2021 Acura changes is the redesign of the Acura TLX sedan. Now Acura's top sedan, the 2021 TLX has a powerful new, turbocharged four-cylinder engine and available Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). A racy Acura TLX Type S version will arrive in Spring 2021. Meanwhile, the Acura RDX line expands to include the hand-built RDX PMC Edition. Other Acura models see minimal changes for the 2021 model year.

Acura's compact, entry-level sedan is unchanged for 2021. It continues on the same platform that first went on sale underneath the 2012 Honda Civic. Read our Acura ILX review.

2021 Acura MDX Changes - Find the best Acura deals!

Acura has already announced that the redesigned MDX will go on sale in early 2021 as a 2022 model. As a result, America's best-selling three-row, luxury crossover SUV will skip the 2021 model year. This is fine by us. The 2022 Acura MDX should bring significant gains in safety, technology and performance. Highlights include an upgraded interior with digital instrumentation and a 12.3-inch infotainment interface, and improved advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) with stop-and-go capability for the adaptive cruise control. The familiar 3.5-liter V-6 engine returns to power the most versions of the 2022 MDX, but come Summer 2021, there will be an Acura MDX Type S with a 355-horsepower, 3.0-liter, turbocharged V-6 and standard SH-AWD. 2021 Acura NSX Changes - Find the best Acura deals!

There's only one change on Acura's exotic, mid-engine, V-6 hybrid sports car for 2021. You can order the 2022 Acura NSX with Long Beach Blue paint. Acura says this new $1,000 paint option is a reformulated version of a rare blue hue offered on the 2002-2005 NSX; only 88 buyers of the first-generation NSX had their cars painted this color. Likely more important to Acura, though, is the tie-in with the automaker's sponsorship of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.

2021 Acura RDX Changes - Find the best Acura deals!

Acura will hand-build 360 examples of the 2021 Acura RDX PMC Edition at its Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Ohio. Essentially a new trim level, the RDX PMC Edition shares its equipment with the RDX SH-AWD model with the Advance Package and will be the only version of the 2021 RDX priced above $50,000. Every PMC Edition Acura RDX will be painted Thermal Orange (a color previously exclusive to the NSX) and get a set of gloss-black 20-inch wheels with coordinating black details on the grille, side mirrors, door handles and exhaust tips. Inside, the interior is black with orange stitching on the seats, console and steering wheel. The console also has a numbered plaque confirming the rarity of each hand-built RDX. The rest of the 2021 RDX lineup is unchanged. Read our Acura RDX review.

2021 Acura RLX Changes - Find the best Acura deals!

The Acura RLX is among the discontinued cars in 2021. Although the RLX offered interesting technology, including SH-AWD, four-wheel-steering and a Sport Hybrid model with three electric motors, it went unnoticed by most luxury sedan shoppers during its 7-year lifespan. Big, expensive sedans are an increasingly tough sell in the United States, as many consumers have moved on to premium-brand crossover SUVs instead.

Redesigned for 2021, the Acura TLX features a 272-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 10-speed automatic transmission, striking new sheetmetal, and a high-quality interior with a new infotainment interface. The new engine largely matches the capabilities of the previous car's V-6, and if it's not enough for you, the higher-performance TLX Type S model is coming soon. Until then, the 2021 Acura TLX comes in a base version with available Technology, A-Spec and Advance option packages. The SH-AWD system is optional on all versions, and we highly recommend it. The AcuraWatch collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) is standard on every 2021 TLX and includes an updated adaptive cruise control system with stop-and-go capability.
