Changes to 2021 Mazda Models Include Tech Upgrades, Turbo Engine for Mazda3, CX30

Erin Riches-Wong | Nov 30, 2020

If you've been wanting more power in the Mazda3 or CX-30, Mazda is adding a 2.5 Turbo version to the top of each model line. Meanwhile, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 and CX-9 get a new, 10.25-inch infotainment display. It's not the touchscreen that many consumers prefer, but the larger, higher-resolution display is a welcome upgrade in Mazda's crossover SUVs.

Mazda's smallest crossover SUV gets an updated version of the automaker's advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) that includes nighttime pedestrian detection. The 2021 Mazda CX-3 also adopts the newer key fob design already used with other Mazdas, and the company has revised the sensitivity of the automatic headlights. Around back, there's a slightly different font for the CX-3 badge. Read our Mazda CX-3 review.

A year after its introduction, this Mazda3-based compact crossover gets an optional, 250-horsepower turbocharged engine for the 2021 model year. Available only with a 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, the 2021 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo will arrive later in the model year and offer a surround-view camera, rear automatic emergency braking, and a traffic jam assistance that accelerates, brakes, steers, and centers the vehicle in its lane at speeds under 40 mph.

Besides that, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration is now standard on all versions of the 2021 Mazda CX-30, and the available factory navigation system now has traffic sign recognition. Read our Mazda CX-30 review.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Changes - Find the best Mazda deals!

All 2021 Mazda CX-5 models get a new 10.25-inch screen for the infotainment interface. It's similar to the setup that debuted in the current Mazda3 and no longer includes touchscreen functionality. In addition, the base CX-5 Sport now has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard equipment, and every 2021 CX-5 gets a 3-year trial subscription to Mazda Connected Services, which allows you to lock the doors or check the fuel level from your phone. In-vehicle Wi-Fi is also included, though that trial subscription only lasts three months.

Alongside that, a Carbon Edition trim level slots into the Mazda CX-5 lineup between the Touring and Grand Touring trim levels. Available with either the normally aspirated 2.5-liter engine or the sweet 2.5-liter turbo, the 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition has Polymetal Gray exterior paint, black 19-inch wheels, black side mirrors, and red leather upholstery.

Sport and Touring trims with AWD gain an off-road traction assist feature that selectively brakes the wheels without traction to improve grip on rough terrain. Top-of-the-line CX-5 Signature models pick up a higher-resolution surround-view camera display (thanks to the new screen), and ADAS enhancements, including rear automatic braking and driver attention monitoring. Like the CX-5, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 gets a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, and access to Mazda Connected Services features.

New equipment on Grand Touring models includes wireless phone charging (optional on the Touring), shift paddles on the steering wheel, rear automatic braking, and driver attention monitoring. Equipped similarly to the GT is the new CX-9 Carbon Edition with Polymetal Gray paint, 20-inch black wheels, gloss-black grille and side mirrors, red leather upholstery, and black metallic interior accents.

The top Signature trim level also gets an updated grille treatment and a new finish for its 20-inch wheels, along with patterned aluminum interior accents and quilted leather upholstery with piping on the edges for the first- and second-row seats. Read our Mazda CX-9 review.

Without question, the arrival of the Mazda3 2.5 Turbo model is the headline for Mazda's compact car in 2021. Rated at 250 hp and 320 pound-feet of torque, the Mazda3's new turbocharged engine is offered only with a 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Otherwise, changes to the 2021 Mazda Mazda3 are limited to equipment updates. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard across the board, and the factory navigation system is paired with a traffic sign recognition system. A Premium Plus option package for the Turbo model includes a surround-view camera, traffic jam assistance, rear automatic braking, and front and rear parking sensors. Read our Mazda Mazda3 review.
