Changes to the 2022 Jeep Models

Beverly Braga | Dec 16, 2021

The Jeep family grows in 2022 with the re-introduction of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, as well as the addition of the all-new Grand Cherokee, which follows last year's Grand Cherokee L debut. Also, the 4xe plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant is now available on two models (Grand Cherokee and Wrangler) with a likely expansion into other Jeeps in the future. For the full lineup, in-car tech improves with Uconnect 5 telematics, larger display screens of the 10.1- and 10.25-inch variety for infotainment and digital clusters, respectively, as well as the implementation of FireTV.

The Jeep Cherokee will return for 2022. However, no information on the changes to Jeep's compact crossover SUV was available as we prepared this article for publication.

2022 Jeep Compass Changes - Find the best Jeep deals!

Redesigned in 2017 and refreshed in 2020, the 2022 Jeep Compass receives yet another slew of updates, including a new trim level. The Latitude LUX is positioned in the middle of the lineup, following the Sport and Latitude trims and preceding the Limited and Trailhawk.

On design, both front-wheel- and 4-wheel-drive (4WD) versions feature a revised front fascia and redesigned headlights and taillights. But the most significant changes are within the cabin. Featuring fewer plastics and more upholstery, the Compass interior feels extra upscale thanks to the newly optional 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment display and 10.25-inch digital cluster. Although powertrains carry over, Jeep retunes the suspension for smoothness and responsiveness.

Standard safety features now include full-speed collision warning, active lane management, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. New for 2022 is a Highway Assist semi-autonomous driving system, which will be available later in the production cycle.

2022 Jeep Gladiator Changes - Find the best Jeep deals!

For 2022, Jeep equips the Gladiator with larger infotainment screens, a standard cabin filtration system that removes 95 percent of particulates, and a new Silver Zynith exterior color. The Gladiator Sport now features a 7-inch Uconnect 4 system. Overland, Rubicon, and Mojave trims receive an 8.4-inch infotainment screen with Uconnect 4C, navigation, an Alpine audio system, and keyless entry.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Changes - Find the best Jeep deals!

Although the 3-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L debuted for the 2021 model year, the standard Grand Cherokee is all-new for 2022. The gas-powered V6 and V8 engines are unchanged, but a new PHEV variant joins them. Buyers can option the Grand Cherokee 4xe on any standard 4x4 trims, excluding the entry-level Laredo and Altitude trims. Likely discontinued, however, is the high-performance Grand Cherokee SRT.

The new Grand Cherokee also sees improved off-roading capabilities. The compact SUV is available with a class-exclusive sway-bar disconnect, and its Quadra-Lift air suspension now features electronic semi-active damping for what Jeep claims is a segment-leading 11.3 inches of ground clearance.

The Cherokee's redesigned interior debuts new in-car tech in the form of Uconnect 5 on an available 10.1-inch infotainment screen. A segment-first 10.25-inch interactive display for front passengers is available, and rear passengers get a 10.1-inch high-definition display—all of which have FireTV capability.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Changes - Find the best Jeep deals!

Resurrected for 2022, the Grand Wagoneer (and Wagoneer) returns to represent a high-luxury lineup for the Jeep brand. Targeting upscale tastes, the all-new Grand Wagoneer is available in four trims (Series I, Series II, Obsidian, and Series III). It is the priciest Jeep with a starting MSRP of $87,845 (plus a $2,000 destination fee). But a six-figure Jeep will offer plenty of fancy fodder.

All Grand Wagoneers are 4WD-only and equipped with a 6.4-liter V8 mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain delivers 471 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. Jeep says this is good for a best-in-class tow rating of up to 10,000 pounds.

An adaptive air suspension provides refined driving manners, which pairs well with the premium interior that offers unmatched spaciousness (i.e., best-in-class volume), comfort (i.e., 4-zone climate control), and entertainment (i.e., 1,750-watt, 23-speaker McIntosh audio). With more than 120 standard and available safety and security features, the Grand Wagoneer gives you peace of mind, too.

2022 Jeep Renegade Changes - Find the best Jeep deals!

The baby of the Jeep family, the Renegade is a carryover model for 2022 but with several notable changes. The small crossover is available in four trims: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk; all but the Sport is 4WD-only.

Updates by trim level include an 8.4-inch Uconnect 5 Nav system as standard on Sport and Latitude, while Jeep outfits the Limited with a new design for the front fascia, rear valance, and 18-inch wheels. A new Altitude package adds gloss-black elements to both the exterior and interior.

However, as much as has been added, the Jeep Renegade does lose an engine choice. Jeep drops the previously standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder in favor of the 1.3-liter turbo-4. Horsepower ratings between the two are similar (180 hp versus 177 hp, respectively), but the smaller turbo does produce more torque with 210 pound-feet.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Changes - Find the best Jeep deals!

The less grand Wagoneer is no less potent. Now back as a stand-alone model, the all-new 2022 Wagoneer sports a 5.7-liter V8 and mild-hybrid eTorque powertrain that produces 392 hp and 404 pound-feet of torque. The transmission is an 8-speed automatic.

The Wagoneer is available in two trims—Series I and Series II—and as a 2-wheel or 4WD model. Its standard 3-row cabin offers seating for eight, but captain's chairs for the second row are an option. Like the Grand Wagoneer, the Wagoneer exhibits a design style that is less rough-rider Wrangler and more lap-of-Nappa-leather-luxury like competitors Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Suburban.

Standard amenities include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, Uconnect 5 with navigation, a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, Android Auto and Apple Carplay integration, a 9-speaker Alpine audio system, and a host of advanced driving assistance systems including blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and an active lane-management system.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Changes - Find the best Jeep deals!

The Wrangler is a carryover model for 2022 but sees trim-specific equipment changes. The Sport and Sport S trims now feature a Uconnect 4 7-inch touchscreen as standard, while Jeep outfits the Sahara and Rubicon with an 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C display as well as keyless entry. A 4.88 axle ratio on 3.6-liter V6-equipped Wrangler Rubicons is newly available with either transmission. On Wrangler 4xe, blue tow hooks are now standard with a blue pad print added to the wheels. The High Altitude 4xe features a new wheel design for 2022 and outside mirrors with integrated turn signals. Silver Zynith is a new exterior paint color for the lineup, replacing Billet Silver.
