Top 5 2020 Small Premium SUVs by Customer Satisfaction

Jack R. Nerad | Jul 22, 2020

Each year, J.D. Power asks thousands of verified new-vehicle owners about their experiences with their newly purchased vehicles through the first 90 days of ownership. The consumer-provided information provides the basis of three industry benchmark studies, including APEAL, the annual Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study.

APEAL is an index study that encapsulates the detailed information gathered about each vehicle in an overall index number. The higher the number, the better the vehicle is in satisfying its owners in terms of design, performance, comfort, safety, usability, and other factors. Vehicles that do the best job of pleasing their owners in these critical areas provide the highest levels of customer satisfaction.

In this post, you'll find the five highest rated 2020 small premium SUVs in customer satisfaction according to the consumers who own them. They are listed in rank order with the most satisfying vehicle listed first and the others in descending order of customer satisfaction. The average index number for this segment is 840.

1. 2020 Jaguar E-Pace – Highest Small Premium SUV in Customer Satisfaction According to Consumers! - Find the best Jaguar deals!

With an exterior that demonstrates a high sense of style, the 2020 Jaguar E-Pace is a 5-passenger premium small SUV that competes in one of the market's fastest-growing segments. Its standard engine is a 246-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, and a more potent 296-horsepower version of the engine is also available. New to the E-Pace this year is a Checkered Flag trim that includes 19-inch alloy wheels, exterior badges, and special interior upholstery. Jaguar also makes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard.

The APEAL index score for the 2020 Jaguar E-Pace is 874, and the E-Pace receives an APEAL award in the Small Premium SUV Segment.

2. 2020 Volvo XC40 - Find the best Volvo deals!

The 2020 Volvo XC40 brings a sense of whimsy to the small premium SUV segment with cheeky styling inside and out. The 5-passenger crossover is offered in three trim levels — Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription — with two gasoline powertrains. In the base (T4) model, Volvo uses a 197-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, and the up-level (T5) has a 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. Both are backed by 8-speed automatic transmissions. Front-drive and all-wheel-drive are available across all three trim levels.

The APEAL index score for the 2020 Volvo XC40 is 858.

3. 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque - Find the best Land Rover deals!

The 2020 Range Rover Evoque from Land Rover rides on a new platform for the model year, yet its styling is reminiscent of the previous generation. Perhaps that's not surprising since the Evoque has been a sales success. The 5-passenger SUV brings with it a Range Rover's legendary off-road capabilities, yet its interior is finished like an upscale English club. All Evoques are all-wheel-drive, and two engines are available — a 246-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, or a 296-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. The latter powertrain features a new 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

The APEAL index score for the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is 848.

4. 2020 BMW X2 - Find the best BMW deals!

The small 2020 BMW X2 crossover SUV is built on the same platform as the BMW X1, but its styling takes it in a sportier direction. BMW says the vehicle's down-swept roofline makes it more "coupe-like" with some sacrifices to interior space. While the X2 also uses the same engine as the X1 — a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder – there are two states of tune. The standard X2 produces 228 horsepower, while the M35i variant makes 301 hp. A new update for the 2020 model year is a bigger 8.8-inch infotainment display screen.

The APEAL index score for the 2020 BMW X2 is 843.

5. 2020 BMW X1 - Find the best BMW deals!

The 2020 BMW X1 is the more conventional of the small BMW SUVs that compete in the rapidly growing small premium SUV segment. With an interior fitted to transport up to five passengers, the X1 has a roomier cabin than the X2, and its cargo area can accommodate 27.1 cubic-feet of cargo versus 21.6 in the X2. Like the X2, the X1 is available in front-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. For 2020, BMW revised the transmission's gear ratios to gain performance from the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine it shares with its sibling X2.

The APEAL index score for the 2020 BMW X1 is 842.
