What is GMC Pro Safety and Pro Safety Plus?

Chris Teague | Aug 12, 2021

GMC, like many automakers, offers a suite of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) that are either standard or available on several of its models. The features help boost vehicle safety scores and enable drivers to pilot their cars with less distraction. GMC's "flavors" of driver aids are called Pro Safety and Pro Safety Plus.

These features do not allow the driver to drive without their attention on the road and do not improve a vehicle's structural safety. Advanced driver aids are intended to act as a second set of eyes and ears to help prevent collisions and accidents involving pedestrians.

GMC notes that it plans to expand the number of models available with Pro Safety and Pro Safety Plus. For now, however, the packages are only available for:

That number seems small, but it's worth noting that GMC's lineup currently only includes a total of six models.

In addition to the available Pro Safety packages, the GMC Yukon is available with a unique rearview camera system that offers up to nine views at the rear of the vehicle. They include:

  • HD rear vision with a high-resolution display of the area directly behind the vehicle
  • HD surround view, which uses multiple cameras to patch together an almost panoramic view of the rear area
  • Hitch guidance view with guidelines to help hitch a trailer. In motion, the camera view allows the driver to check the trailer connection.
  • Rear camera mirror that projects a digital view of the vehicle's rear view into the mirror

Teen driver mode is also available, allowing parents to register one of a vehicle's key fobs for their young driver. Once activated, the car will sense the teen's key, set pre-determined audio volume limits, start safety features, and generate a report card on the teen's driving habits. Parents can also use a PIN to enable speed warnings and speed limiters on the vehicle.

GMC also offers a rear-seat reminder system that reminds drivers of items or children left in the back seat. If the system detects a person or object in the back seat, the vehicle will sound a chime and show a warning when the door is opened to remind the driver to check the back seat.

GMC's safety packages will become more available across its lineup as time goes on. However, parent company General Motors does not have as many models that earn top safety marks compared to most other automakers. No 2021 GMC models received a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and only one Chevrolet model earned an award.
