What is Jaguar Land Rover Pivi Pro?

Christian Wardlaw | Jun 03, 2020

With the return of the Land Rover Defender comes an all-new touchscreen infotainment system called Pivi Pro. The Defender’s ground-up design and engineering program allowed Land Rover to equip the midsize SUV with the company’s latest Electronic Vehicle Architecture (EVA 2.0), which in turn supports the high-tech Jaguar Land Rover Pivi Pro infotainment technology.

With Pivi Pro, Jaguar Land Rover completely rethinks its approach to its infotainment system. Employing its own backup battery, the system is designed to load immediately following the start of the engine, ready to accept destination requests from that moment. Land Rover also claims Pivi Pro offers a simplified user experience, provides instant response to input, and requires fewer steps to access and activate commonly used functions.

Should these characteristics prove true, this new infotainment system will represent a massive improvement over previous Land Rover technologies.

In the new Land Rover Defender, Pivi Pro’s standard features include a 10-inch touchscreen display, wireless smartphone charging, Bluetooth pairing for two devices at the same time, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

With navigation, the technology employs dynamic route guidance and what Land Rover calls “self-learning algorithms” to improve destination routing. It also comes with Smart Voice Guidance, which turns off the audible navigation instructions when the technology determines that you are in a familiar area.

Drivers can choose to view navigation mapping within the Defender’s 12.3-inch digital instrumentation, rendered as high-definition 3-D directions and leaving the SUV’s center touchscreen free to perform other functions.

Land Rover says it modeled Pivi Pro after modern smartphones. It is powered by two high-performance Qualcomm Snapdragon processors with individual integrated LTE modems and Blackberry QNX operating systems. One set of processors handles what Land Rover calls the Logic functions of Pivi Pro. The other runs the Creative functions.

Perhaps the most important thing about Pivi Pro is that it supports over-the-air (OTA) updates from anywhere in the world, ensuring that it’s software and navigation maps are always as up-to-date as is possible. Using a standard built-in data plan, these updates are automatically downloaded directly to the Defender. Owners receive a prompt to install the update, which can be done immediately or at a more convenient time.

Because it has two processors, modems, and operating systems, Pivi Pro can download updates at the same time the Defender’s driver and occupants are streaming music or running applications. Additionally, Pivi Pro offers an available Wi-Fi data package, an optional Online Pack providing unlimited data for a variety of features and functions, and the ability to roam LTE networks in order to optimize connectivity.

Expect Pivi Pro to expand beyond the new 2020 Defender as new Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles are redesigned to use EVA 2.0.
